Definitions

What we mean by DME, SME, and adaptive equipment

Durable medical equipment (DME) generally refers to equipment intended for repeated use that supports a person’s medical, functional, mobility, positioning, personal-care, or daily living needs.

Specialized medical equipment (SME) can include equipment, devices, controls, technology, and other supports used to address individualized functional, accessibility, independence, safety, communication, or daily living needs.

Adaptive equipment is designed or configured to make an activity more accessible to a person with a disability, injury, mobility limitation, sensory need, or other support need.

These categories overlap with assistive technology, and programs define them differently. You do not need to know which category applies before you contact GMA.

Beyond the Standard

When standard equipment doesn’t fit

That is exactly when a person-centered approach matters most. GMA can look beyond standard product categories and explore adaptive equipment, specialized technology, customization, environmental changes, or several coordinated solutions.

Existing equipment is considered first. New equipment should not replace something that is working well. When several pieces are needed, the goal is a solution built around the whole person, not a collection of unrelated devices.

The Process

From recommendation to daily use

Confirm and authorize

Confirm the recommendation and complete any funding or authorization steps that apply.

Order, configure, deliver

Ordering, configuration, customization, logistics, and delivery or installation, depending on the equipment.

Train and follow up

Training for the person and, where appropriate, caregivers and staff, with follow-up as needs change.

Some equipment is straightforward. Some requires significantly more coordination. See how GMA works.

Funding

Funding varies by payer and program

What qualifies as DME can vary by payer, insurance plan, Medicaid program, waiver, benefit, and other funding source. Depending on the person and the equipment, pathways may include participating Medicaid waiver programs, TRICARE, private pay, financing, grants, or organizational purchasing.

Funding, eligibility, approved services, and geographic availability vary by program, payer, state, and individual circumstances. GMA can help you understand possible pathways, but cannot guarantee coverage or approval.

Common Questions

Common questions

Is assistive technology the same as DME or SME?

Not necessarily. These categories can overlap, but different programs and funding sources define them differently. A device may qualify differently depending on the person, program, purpose, documentation, and payer.

Can equipment be shipped?

Many products can be shipped, depending on the equipment, service area, funding requirements, and installation needs. Some solutions require additional coordination.

Who sets up the equipment?

It depends on the product. Some equipment arrives ready for straightforward use. Other solutions are configured, customized, installed, or onboarded with involvement from GMA, the manufacturer, the organization, caregivers, or other qualified parties.

What if the equipment stops working?

The right next step depends on the product, manufacturer, warranty, service arrangement, and the problem. GMA can help identify the appropriate next step for the products and systems it supports.

Not sure what equipment fits? Start with the goal.
